Think Tank Tracks Climate Aid PledgesThe World Resources Institute has launched an online tool that allows visitors to its Web site to track climate aid pledges stemming from the 2009 Copenhagen climate conference, according to an August 25 story published by The Hill. TECHNOLOGY UPDATES‘Walk Among Giants’: Biopower and TransportationEnergy crop developer Ceres, Inc., hosted energy industry executives, investors and policymakers at a bioenergy field day in late August at the company’s 200-acre College Station, Texas, research facility (see feature, this issue). A number of topics were discussed in relation to bioenergy crops, and the applications of these plants are far reaching beyond just biofuels, as several other speakers at the Ceres event pointed out. Rutgers Researcher Alters Genes of E. Coli to Produce BiodieselRutgers University–Camden announced September 2 that one of its researchers, Desmond Lun, an associate professor of computer science, is looking into how to alter the genetic makeup of E. coli to produce biodiesel fuel derived from fatty acids. First New Chlorophyll Discovered in 60 Years; Potential Impacts on Biofuels ProductionAn Australian professor has discovered the first new chlorophyll pigment in more than 60 years, according to his published findings in the international journal, Science. UNICA President: Brazil-India Cooperation Key to Global Ethanol AdvancementThe Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association (UNICA) reported on September 2 that the joint efforts of two Brazil and India, the world's largest sugar cane producers, is crucial to making ethanol a global commodity and a sustainable, low carbon energy alternative to replace oil, according to a presentation given on September 1 by UNICA President Marcos Jank at the Kingsman consultancy's 2nd Indian Sugar Summit, in New Delhi, India. Argentine Algae Biofuel Producer Opens Processing PlantAn Argentine algae fuel company that plans to use pond scum as a replacement for soy in making biodiesel opened its biodiesel processing plant on Aug. 27, according to recent Reuters article. Russia Wants to Export Biofuels to EUA September 6 report from RIA Novosti (Russia) noted that Russia wants to begin supplying oilseeds and biofuels to the European Union, Deputy Agriculture Minister Alexander Petrikov said the same day. Capital Markets Crucial to Combating Climate ChangeThe U.K. Department of Energy and Climate Change reported on September 7 that Climate Change Minister Greg Barker launched the Capital Markets Climate Initiative (CMCI) at the London Stock Exchange that day. According to the agency, the vital role of capital markets in tackling climate change has been ignored for too long. Komatsu Looks for Biodiesel CustomersBloomberg reported September 1 that construction and mining equipment manufacturer Komatsu Ltd. plans to seek additional customers for biodiesel fuel from a joint venture pilot project in Indonesia scheduled to begin production this year. US$19.7 Million Loan to Mumias Sugar for Kenyan Ethanol PlantAccording to an August 30 report from the Daily Nation (Kenya), local sugar and power company Mumias Sugar Co.
