ASU Develops Self-Destructing Bacteria for Biofuels Production

An Arizona State University research team has developed a process that removes a key obstacle to producing lower-cost, renewable biofuels, ScienceDaily reported Dec. 8.

NASA Develops Algae Bioreactor

In mid-November, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration announced that it invented an algae photo-bioreactor that grows algae in municipal wastewater to produce biofuel and a variety of other products. The NASA bioreactor is an offshore membrane enclosure for growing algae, which won’t compete with agriculture for land, fertilizer or freshwater.

BioFuelBox Named Technology Pioneer by World Economic Forum

BioFuelBox announced Dec. 3 that it has been selected as a 2010 Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

U.S. DOE, USDA Unveil US$600 Million for Biorefinery Projects

U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack on Dec. 4 announced 19 integrated biorefinery projects will get up to US$564 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grants to accelerate the construction and operation of pilot, demonstration and commercial-scale facilities, plus a $54 million USDA loan guarantee.

Synterra Fuels to Commercialize Next-Generation Biorefineries

Pacific Renewable Fuels and Red Lion Bio-Energy announced Dec. 2 that they have formed joint venture Synterra Fuels to focus on the commercialization and deployment of integrated biorefineries.
