SAE World Congress Gets Contradictory Messages on Light-Duty Diesels

Detroit – With U.S. retail diesel trading at more than 70¢/gallon premium to regular gasoline – and up to $1/gallon higher in some states, such as Michigan – prospects for enticing North American car buyers to choose diesel look poor today.

But that didn’t stop several expert speakers from predicting that the longer-term prospects for North American light-duty dieselization look rather good.

Fuels-Combustion Modeling Could Help Refiners, Engine-Makers Make Smarter Choices

Detroit – Refiners and engine makers face a bewildering future of alternative combustion schemes and alternative feedstocks and fuels, with costly and time-consuming engine-lab testing often required to spot problems and opportunities.

But a new software modeling tool, developed as a result of an oil and automotive industry joint “Model Fuels Consortium” work in recent years, could help cut such costs and test-cell time dramatically.

Despite High U.S. Diesel Prices, VW/Audi Not Changing Introduction Plans

With U.S. diesel prices trading at a huge premium to gasoline – up to $1/gallon in some places – automakers understandably might consider delaying introductions of ultra-clean U.S. EPA Tier-2, Bin-5 diesel cars to the North American market this year.

India’s Leading Green Group Blames ‘Capitalism’ for Pollution

Centre for Science & Environment (CSE), the best-known “green” advocacy group in India and well-recognized world-wide, this month blames “capitalism” for all the environmental problems in the world.

CSE earlier led a hugely publicized battle to ban all diesel taxis and buses in Delhi and elsewhere, convincing the country’s Supreme Court to order massive conversions to compressed natural gas (CNG), supposedly to cut air pollution.
