NYK Touts Marine Gasoil Lubricity Additive
Japan-based NYK and its subsidiary Nippon Yuka Kogyo Co. Ltd. announced June 14 that they’ve developed a lubricity additive for low-sulfur marine gasoil – a “cleaner” fuel that is replacing heavy bunker fuel oil in certain “emission control areas” as specified by recent International Maritime Organization Marpol Annex-6 rules.

A new study released June 17 by Charles River Associates for Washington, D.C.-based energy producer/consumer group Consumer Energy Alliance finds that a notional U.S. nationwide low-carbon fuel standard starting in 2015 could cause diesel and gasoline prices to soar by 90% to 170% by 2025, while drastically reducing U.S. oil refining capacity.

The New York Senate and House last week passed an amended bill mandating a 15 parts per million limit on sulfur in heating oil (gasoil) starting July 1, 2012 –close on the heels of similar legislation approved in Connecticut late last month.
