The world’s green plants are absorbing carbon dioxide (CO2) much faster than had been expected or predicted, according to a new study by an international group of scientists organized by Germany’s Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research-UFZ.

An 80% Cut in Vehicle GHG ‘Plausible’ by 2050: ORNL Researcher
Detroit – It’s “plausible” for the auto industry in the U.S. to slash vehicle greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions 80% by 2050, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) transportation energy analyst David Greene told the annual Directions in Engine Efficiency and Emissions Research (DEER) conference here October 3.

CARB to Start Enforcing Low-Sulfur Bunker Fuel Rule Dec. 1, 2011
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) announced October 3 that it has revised the deadline for the start of enforcement of the first part of its marine bunker fuel rules to December 1, 2011.

A 3,600-acre fire that burned more than 100 buildings including 29 homes – allegedly caused by a runaway regeneration of a Cleaire diesel-particulate filter (DPF) on a truck – prompted the California Air Resources Board to suspend sales and installation of two types of Cleaire DPFs.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced October 6 that it has ordered Volkswagen to recall more than 168,000 diesel cars in the U.S. because of a fuel-injection system that could leak and cause fires.

The European Commission on October 4 announced that it will propose legislation declaring that oil-sands crude from Canada must be categorized as relatively high in greenhouse-gas (GHG) life-cycle emissions – potentially complicating future exports of oil sands-derived ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) from U.S. refiners to Europe.

U.S. National Research Council: Biofuel Targets Won’t be Met by 2022
The U.S. National Research Council (NRC) on October 4 released a long-awaited report showing that the U.S. isn’t likely to achieve the cellulosic biofuels targets spelled-out in the U.S. Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007 and the renewable fuel standard-2 (RFS-2) regulatory mandates for 2022.

RIN Marketer Charged in US$9 Million Fuel-Credit Scheme
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) jointly announced October 3 that they have filed wire-fraud and money-laundering charges against Rodney Hailey of Baltimore-based Clean Green Fuel LLC for allegedly selling US$9 million in renewable information number (RIN) biofuel credits “when in fact the company did not produce any renewable fuel.”
