Greens: Palm-Oil Biodiesel Worse on GHG than U.S. EPA Calculates
A preliminary finding by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that palm-oil-derived biodiesel fails to meet minimum lifecycle greenhouse-gas (GHG) reductions for the Renewable Fuel Standard-2 (RFS-2) regulation is more than justified, according to a coalition of “green” groups.

CEC Adopts Plan to Increase Use of Alternative Vehicles, Biofuels
The California Energy Commission (CEC) on May 9 unanimously adopted a 2012-2013 Investment Plan Update to increase the use of green and alternative vehicles. The update, according to a statement issued by CEC, sets funding priorities for the approximately US$100 million in annual state funds under the CEC’s Alternative and Renewable Fuel and Vehicle Technology Program (AB 118 program).

Bill Introduced in U.S. House to Provide Tax Credits for Renewable Chemicals
In a bipartisan effort that would spur job creation in the burgeoning biotechnology industries, Reps Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ) and Brian Bilbray (R-CA) introduced on April 26 the Qualifying Renewable Chemical Production Tax Credit Act of 2012 (H.R. 4953), which would amend the Internal Revenue Code to provide a credit for the production of renewable chemicals.

Albuquerque, N.M.-based Applied Research Associates Inc. (ARA) announced on May 14 that Chevron Lummus Global (CLG), a 50/50 joint venture between Chevron Products Co. and Lummus Technology, has joined ARA’s ReadiJet Alternative Fuel Initiative to develop drop-in biofuels.

According to a joint statement released by Iowa State University and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies on May 13, research groups from both universities have uncovered the function of three plant proteins, a discovery that could help plant scientists boost seed oil production in crops, thereby benefitting the production of food, renewable chemicals and biofuels.

Global refining and marketing company Neste Oil announced on May 15 it expanded the range of renewable raw materials it uses to produce its trademarked renewable diesel, NExBTL, from waste fat sourced from the fish processing industry at its 800,000-ton-per-year facility in Singapore.

Burlington, Ontario-based biopolymer producer EcoSynthetix Inc. announced on May 14 that it commissioned a new 80-million-pound production line within its existing U.S. manufacturing facility, which brought the company’s total annualized production capacity to 235 million pounds, the company said in a statement.

Canada-based Bombardier Recreational Products Inc. (BRP) announced on May 9 it will begin to test butanol-extended fuel (isobutanol) in a variety of recreational marine engines for Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Vehicle Technologies Office. Butanol-extended fuel will be tested as an alternative to gasoline containing 15% ethanol (E15), the company stated.
