New Technology May Help Increase Propylene Production
To increase the market’s ability to meet future propylene demand, two Japanese suppliers of petrochemical technology have begun construction of a pilot plant to demonstrate the validity of a new technology for producing propylene from dimethylether and olefins byproducts. MCC and JGC also noted that the technology will lower CO2 emissions compared to other propylene producing processes.

A Shell analysis of various options for diesel-powered ocean ship operators to meet future International Maritime Administration Marpol Annex-6 emissions and fuels limits shows that stack-emissions scrubbing could slash sulfur oxides and particulate matter, but would cause small increases in carbon dioxide.

The price of Brent crude for February delivery closed Dec. 28 at $77.32 per barrel (/bbl), about 5% higher than Dec. 23 – the last price recorded before the Christmas holiday. West Texas Intermediate crude for February delivery closed 2.75% higher, to US$78.77/bbl.

The National Petrochemical & Refiners Association (NPRA) submitted comments December 23 to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) opposing its proposed rulemaking on “Prevention of Significant Deterioration and Title V Greenhouse Gas Tailoring Rule.”
