Pemex has appointed refining veteran, Miguel Tame, to head the company’s oil refining and marketing subsidiary.

New Field Condensate Refinery in Qatar Onstream
Qatargas is now able to add value to field condensates with the start-up of a new refinery. The Laffan refinery started up in December with the ability to process the equivalent of 146,000 barrels per day of field condensates.

The Oman Tender Board has awarded a RO31m (US$80.5 million) refinery supply contract to Germany’s Grace.

Sinopec’s Zhenhai Refinery Adds World Scale Ethylene Production Capacity
The Zhenhai refinery in the Chinese province of Zheijiang now has the capacity to produce 1 million t/a of ethylene. The Sinopec facility becomes the country’s largest refinery with the biggest ethylene production base.

Chennai Petroleum Increasing Capacity at Manali Refinery
Improvements to Chennai Petroleum Corp.’s Manali refinery will result in expanded capacity of products capable of meeting Euro-IV specifications. The current crude distillate unit will be expanded and a new diesel hydrotreater and isomerization unit will be started up in 2010.

Declining Energy Demand in Japan
Representatives with Nippon Oil, Japan’s largest refiner, and Nippon Mining said Dec. 25 they will close about 20% of their total processing capacity by March as demand declines in Japan.
