Calgary, Alberta-based Canadian Natural Resources (CNR) officials on Jan. 28 announced a deal to acquire a 50% asset stake in fellow Calgary-based North West Upgrading (NWU), developer of a gasification-based scheme to convert oil sands to ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD), naphtha and bitumen diluent.

Murphy Oil Corporation officials announced Jan. 28 that refining and marketing operations incurred a loss of $4.1 million in the fourth quarter of 2009 compared to income of $140.5 million in the 2008 quarter.

PetroChina Tops List of 50 Largest Energy Companies
The combined value of the 50 largest publicly traded energy companies increased 35% in 2009 to $3.9 trillion, according to energy consultants PFC Energy. That value remains 26% below its $5.2 trillion high at the end of 2007. The 35% gain compares with increases of 71% in oil prices and 20% in the S&P 500 over the same period.

Crude Futures Continue Downward Trend
Crude futures prices remained flat Jan. 28. The price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude for March delivery settled at US$73.64 per barrel (bbl), down 3¢, while Brent crude for March delivery slipped 13¢, to close at $72.13/bbl.
