Gas Analyzer Applications in Refinery Operations
Process gas analyzers in a refinery, when integrated with process control and optimization systems, can provide better control of major conversion units. These analyzers are being applied to a wider variety of plant operations.

LCO Upgrading: What are the Limits?
Light cycle oil (LCO) upgrading continues to draw the attention of refiners. The process complexity required to achieve product targets, such as improved cetane, are difficult to maintain for run lengths of two or more years. However, new catalysts and reactor improvements are making LCO more feasible.
Q&A
-
Unit Fractionation Improvements
Contrary to traditional practice when performing butadiene unit maintenance during a turnaround, mechanical removal of polymer formation can be avoided with chemical cleaning. Butadiene units are experiencing higher levels of fouling and polymer formation with the introduction of heavy feedstocks.

Refining Outlook 2010: Contrasts and Opportunities
2010 will be a pivotal year for the energy industry. Refinery overexpansion from the previous upcycle will be felt, while the industry adjusts to shifts in market demand.
Project Updates
-
Asia Pacific
China National Offshore Oil Corp. is nearly doubling capacity of the Huizhou refinery, while Sinopec Zenhai refinery is adding olefin capacity, and Chennai Petroleum in India is expanding naphtha cracking capacity.
-
Commonwealth of Independent States
Siberian petrochemical producer plans to increase olefins and polymer production. Bulgarian refiner is increasing capacity and complexity with Lukoil’s assistance.
-
Europe
Some refinery capacity expansion is expected in Europe in 2010, particularly in Eastern Europe. Rompetrol’s Petromida refinery in Romania is planning to increase capacity by 25%.
-
Latin America
Petrobras is expecting a busy 2010 with refinery expansion plans. The Cartagena refinery in Columbia is also slated for improvements, while the Petrojam refinery project in Jamaica has been put on hold due to cost overruns.
-
Middle East
Process diversification outside of traditional oil refining is evident in the Middle East, such as with the Qatar Petrochemical Co.’s new low-density polyethylene plant in Qatar. Also in the same Middle Eastern country, the first field condensate refinery recent began commercial production.
-
North America
Previously announced expansions at the Consumers’ Cooperative Refineries Ltd. refinery in Saskatchewan, Canada, and the Chevron Pascagoula, Miss., facility involve contracts for “traditional” engineering and construction support. In addition, increasing volumes of non-oil based hydrocarbons are being processed through process facilities, such as the soon-to-be expanded Targa Resources Partners natural gas liquids production facility in Mont Belvieu, Texas.
